Over the weekend, I embarked on a thrilling adventure with my hiking buddies to Kereita Forest, a hidden gem that had long been on my radar. Nestled within the Aberdare ecosystem, this forest is more than just a hike — it’s an experience that immerses you in nature, history, and adrenaline-packed activities. This time, I was determined to dive into the full package, and Kereita Forest did not disappoint!
The Journey to Kereita Forest
Our day began in Nairobi, where we met at Ngara Civil Servants Housing, our usual assembly point. From there, our 62-kilometer journey began. The drive to Kereita Forest takes about an hour and a half, but we made a quick stop at Java Coffee House along Waiyaki Way to pick up some friends.
The energy was electric. Adrenaline-pumped bikers with their roaring engines filled the atmosphere, and it was inspiring to see women among them, fully geared up and ready for their own adventures to Naivasha.
As we proceeded, the journey gifted us with breathtaking views of the Great Rift Valley. The escarpment at the Viewpoint is nothing short of magical — sweeping landscapes that remind you why Kenya is a jewel of natural beauty.
Hiking Through Kereita Forest
Arriving at Kereita Forest, we were welcomed by the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) guards and our friendly guides. The history of the forest unfolded as we learned about its role as a hideout for Mau Mau fighters during Kenya’s fight for independence. Knowing I was about to walk trails once trodden by freedom fighters filled me with a deep sense of pride and curiosity.
Before hitting the trail, we stretched in an open area surrounded by lush greenery. The 10-kilometer hike began with enthusiasm, and every step deeper into Kereita Forest revealed more of its treasures.
Wildlife Encounters in Kereita Forest
Kereita Forest isn’t just about trees. It’s a thriving ecosystem home to elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, and countless bird species. The harmonious chirping of birds accompanied us as we walked, and though we didn’t spot any large mammals, knowing they roamed freely was exhilarating. The forest truly feels alive.
The Majestic Waterfall
Halfway through the hike, we began to hear the unmistakable roar of a waterfall. The sound alone injected a burst of energy into our tired legs. And then, there it was — a majestic waterfall tucked away in the forest.
The sight was nothing short of spectacular. Crystal-clear water cascaded down steep rocks into a serene pool below. The water was icy cold, refreshing, and safe to drink. It felt like sipping from the purest source of life itself.
We paused here for photos, taking in the sheer beauty of the scene. For a moment, time stood still. It’s moments like these that remind you of the power and serenity of nature.
The Forest Adventure Centre
As we completed our hike, we arrived at the famous Forest Adventure Centre, the heart of fun and excitement in Kereita Forest. This spot is a haven for thrill-seekers and relaxation lovers alike. It’s home to East Africa’s longest zipline, stretching an exhilarating 2.2 kilometers. The zipline offers a heart-thumping ride across the forest canopy that gives you a bird’s-eye view of the green ocean below.
For those less inclined toward adrenaline, the centre offers other activities like archery, paintball, mountain biking, horse riding, and footgolf.
Lunch with a View
After the hike, we settled at the Canopy-View Restaurant. This wasn’t just a meal; it was an experience. The views were mesmerizing — the sprawling green of Kereita Forest stretching to the horizon, Elephant Hill standing tall in the Aberdare National Park, and even glimpses of Mount Kenya’s peaks on a clear day.
The food was equally satisfying. Whether you’re there for a light snack or a full meal, the restaurant ensures you leave with a full stomach and a happy soul.
Eco-Tourism and Conservation in Kereita Forest
Beyond the adventure, one of the most striking aspects of Kereita Forest is its commitment to conservation. Our guides shared how the community, once evicted from the forest, is now deeply involved in its protection. By including locals in conservation efforts, the forest not only thrives as a sanctuary for flora and fauna but also supports eco-tourism that benefits everyone.
This collaboration between the government, the Kenya Forest Service, and the community sets an example of how conservation can be inclusive and sustainable.
Unwinding Before Heading Home
After a fulfilling hike and some thrilling moments at the adventure centre, we began our journey back to Nairobi. Along the way, we stopped in Kimende for a late lunch/dinner — the ultimate Kenyan feast of beef, sukuma wiki, ugali, and kachumbari, spiced with lots of pili pili. It was the perfect way to cap off an incredible day.
